Boone, Iowa 50036
Occupation: Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist
Spouse: Robert Herrick

Update 2017:

A few years ago I retired from doing Substance Abuse prevention work but knew I couldn't just stay around home, so I have been working part time for The Salvation Army for the past three years here in Boone as a Representative Payee, helping my clients manage their Social Security money. Interesting work and working at it only part time leaves me time for everything else in my life.

I am a member of the Board of Directors of the Boone Community Theatre and I direct and act in our productions.

I have served a number of years on the Board of Directors of our Women and Children's Shelter.

I am still very active in the Rotary Club of Boone and in District 6000 Rotary, chairing our PolioPlus work. Also work with our Rotary Youth Exchange program. Have been honored to supervise over ten exchanges have somewhere to stay when we travel!

Being grandmother to six children - five boys and one girl - is the best! I am especially busy helping my son and his wife raise money and awareness for the disease that Jack (6) has: ataxia telangiectasia. Genetic neurological disease that we are working to find a cure for. Jack is currently in a trial study at Houston that is showing great promise.

Bob & I still live in the home I grew up in here in Boone.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our 50th reunion. 50? Can that be right? I'm sure someone's math is wrong - we're still just kids!!

Susan

Update 2012:
Life never stays the same. Bob & I still live here in Boone but my job has changed significantly. I am now Director of Creative Prevention Resources, doing things as varied as a high school drama group, media literacy training, and financial coaching. Never a boring moment.

Ruth Ann and Joe now have three little boys - Roman, age 4, Judah, age 2 and Silas, age 1. They will be moving to Madison, Wisc. in April as he has gotten a large promotion to head up a section of Modern Woodmen.

Jim and Chelsey now have two boys - Carter, age 3, and Jack, age 1. Jim is a Presidential Appointee, serving as Special Assistant to the UnderSecretary of the Army at the Pentagon. I have been lucky enough to travel to their home in Virginia a number of times and been to the Whitehouse with Jim a couple of times - to see Christmas decorations and to see the reception for the President of Mexico. Very heady stuff!

Update 2010:
Bob and I were married at 4:00 p.m. on February 15, 2003 - the nastiest weather day of the winter - at the Boone Golf & Country Club. It was a beautiful ceremony. We honeymooned prior to the ceremony in Jamaica for 11 days - gave the bride a nice tan for the festivities!
Children: Ruth Ann 18, James David 16
Grandchildren: Not yet, thanks!
Life History: Following graduation, I attended Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, graduating with a degree in speech and theatre arts. I attended graduate school at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO. When I left Colorado, I moved to North Carolina where I resided on the beach for 5 years and worked for an attorney while also directing in a dinner theatre. I returned to Boone in 1977 and worked at several jobs until 1982. In that year I married David Mowrer and began my career in substance abuse prevention as director of Boone County Prevention where I am still employed. David and I had two children. He was killed in a tractor/train accident in December of 1993. I still have an avid interest in the theatre and direct the Prevention Company, a group of middle/high school students, as a part of my job. My daughter will begin college this fall and my son will enter his junior year at BHS (I’m sure if we think hard enough we can remember what that is like). Davi asked us to summarize our lives – well, life is good, never boring. I have great friends and family – and I’m looking forward to the next 50 years of my life!
